Games That Are Certified Winners

stalker
Metacritic 82% / Steam Overwhelmingly Positive

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R series of games is often referenced when talking about post-apocalyptic action-horror.  Released in 2007, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl’s graphics are a bit dated, but the gameplay holds up well to today’s standards.

At the time of its release, it was one of the first open world first person shooters.  The atmosphere is consistently bleak and haunting throughout the entire game.

With elements of RPG, FPS, and survival horror S.T.A.L.K.E.R has a lot to offer.  Another nice advantage is, since it is an older game, it will easily run on most systems including laptops.

days gone
Metacritic 76% / Steam Very Positive

an outlaw biker drifting through the Northwest during a zombie apocalypse is one hell of a game premise.  You almost feel like Daryl Dickson as you ride through this zombie wasteland.

The game takes place two years after a viral outbreak turns half of the world’s population into cannibalistic zombie-like creatures called freakers.  Your character, Deacon St John, takes off through this apocalyptic world to find his missing wife Sarah.

In addition to keeping yourself alive, you have to keep your bike running as well.  It is your lifeline, and what pushes you forward throughout the game.  This mechanic makes the game a bit more interesting.

In playing Days Gone I found myself just wanting to explore and fight.  I often realized I had lost track of the story because the world itself is so interesting.

If you enjoy post-apocalyptic zombie survival horror, you can’t go wrong with Dayz Gone.  I found far more enjoyment in Dayz Gone than I did in DayZ.

dusk
Metacritic 88% / Steam Overwhelmingly Positive

By looking at the screenshot you may have thoughts of the original Doom or Quake games.  There is a good reason for that.  Dusk is based on some of the best historic first-person shooters including Doom, Quake, and Half-Life.

Somehow, Dusk manages to make the retro-styled graphics look great.  There is a large diversity of enemies throughout Dusk from possessed scarecrows to hooded klansmen with dark magic.  There is also a large variety of guns.

Dusk isn’t just a clone of 90’s shooters.  It offers up its own interesting horror story.  Dusk is a wonderful mix of 90’s and modern mechanics and stays interesting throughout its entire run.

arma 3
Metacritic 74% / Steam Very Positive

While Arma 3 was released in 2013, the graphics still hold up to today’s standards.  Every time we have a conflict in the world, some moron is putting out Arma 3 footage claiming it is footage from the actual conflict.

Arma 3 was considered huge for a first-person shooter when it was released, and even by today’s standards, it is still a mid-sized shooter.

Arma 3 is a game that once it clicks with you, it stays with you.  I’ve been playing it on and off for 10 years, and most likely will still be playing it in another 10 years.

Arma 3 is unlike any other shooter I’ve ever played.  It manages to make War feel real and not just a video game.  It is one of the few games I will never get bored of playing.

While I can’t say Arma 3 isn’t without its bugs, after playing it for a bit they almost add character to the game.

If you’ve never played Arma 3, get it while it’s on sale.  Hopefully you can also get 10 years of gaming out of it.

kingdom come deliverance
Metacritic 76% / Steam Very Positive

The Kingdom Come Deliverance: Royal Edition includes the base game of Kingdom Come Deliverance plus every DLC released.

Kingdom Come Deliverance is a huge RPG.  If you are a completionist, it will take you roughly 130 hours to complete everything in the game.

The first thing you notice when you start Kingdom Come Deliverance is how beautiful the graphics are.  While the gameplay does start out a little bit slow, if you stick with it for 3-4 hours, it is well worth it.

In Kingdom Come Deliverance you start as the son of a blacksmith with your parents recently murdered.  The beginning of the game is very difficult.  Within the first 30 minutes I had already gotten my ass kicked by a drunk in town.

As far as medieval RPG’s go, Kingdom Come Deliverance is one of the most realistic you will find.  The NPC’s even let you know if you are starting to get B.O. and need to clean yourself (cleanliness is godliness).

While Kingdom Come Deliverance has a slow start and high learning curve, it is well worth sticking with it.  I don’t think I’ve seen another game that is as beautiful, realistic, or feels as complete.
